Finding the right candidate starts with the right questionnaire

A great recruitment process requires great tools—and fortunately, one of the best is also one of the easiest to implement. A solid interview questionnaire will enable you to capture useful, relevant information—and ultimately help you hire the best candidate.

When developing your questionnaire, it’s important to create behavioral-based questions that drill into what someone has done in the past: How has the candidate approached difficult situations? How have they handled complex scenarios? How do they collaborate with others?

The feedback you get from these questions will be vital as you and your team meet with various candidates and begin to evaluate who is best suited to add value to your organization. The answers can lead to deeper dives as well, informing follow-up questions that will allow you to learn more about how a candidate might respond in scenarios they are likely to face in your workplace.

You’ll want to make sure your questionnaire is the same for everyone—or for each position, if you’d like to vary the questions based on the specific role—so you can evaluate candidates based on the same information. Of course, you should take thorough notes in order to retain and review the information throughout the recruitment timeline (which can last a month or longer).

In addition to the above benefits, your questionnaire also shows that you are being fair with all candidates. If your recruitment/hiring practices are ever called into question, you can refer back to your process and the retained documentation.
